The Current State and Future Promise of 3G Networks This report has the following four key objectives: · To clarify what 3G is about, at least as envisaged by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), which is widely acknowledged as the original and principal architect of the 3G vision. · To articulate the promise of 3G and the perceived benefits to consumers and providers that are fueling the drive for a third-generation mobile communications system. · To clarify the idea of "generations" in mobile communications systems and discuss the implications that the idea of generations has for the migration to 3G. · To situate the evolution to 3G within the larger complex of political, economic, and social issues that inform the process. Trends that enable and inhibit 3G's evolution are also discussed.
