Irish
telecoms group Meteor today described the newly-launched 3G licences
as "too expensive" to make economic sense. Speaking with Business
& Finance, Meteor general manager Dave Sims said it was very difficult
to see a business case for applying for the licence. However, he did
confirm that Meteor would be regrouping its previously disbanded 3G
team to study the licence conditions.

local paper has reported NEC and Panasonic Telecom have planned to join
hands with China's major telecom operators to co-develop the 3G mobile
phones.

The
problem for phone companies, which have committed billions to 3G, is
that they do not really know what people will want to do with these
futuristic services. And they are still not sure how they should charge
people for these services; or if the technology will really work properly.

At
the Lehman Brothers Telecommunications Conference in Florida USA last
week, John Zeglis CEO of AT&T confirmed the company expects to spend
$1 billion on its final 3G network upgrade.

Unicom, the second-biggest telecom service provider in China, will launch
code division multiple access (CDMA) service January 8, South Korea's
Information and Communication Vice Minister Kim Dong-sun said Friday.
