CDG Outline benefits of 3G and CDMA2000

US : The CDMA Development Group (CDG) announced that it co-hosted a seminar in San Jose, Costa Rica, that showcased the CDMA2000(R) family of standards and their capabilities.

The event was organized by the CDG, the embassies of the United States and the Republic of Korea, and the Costa Rican Ministry of Science and Technology. Nearly 100 delegates attended the event, including key government officials, leading representatives from the Costa Rican business community and members of the local media.

"CDMA is the fastest-growing wireless technology worldwide and is leading in 3G. It has a very strong base in Latin America and many operators in the region have migrated from cdmaOne(TM) or TDMA to enjoy the benefits of CDMA2000," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG.

"The CDG works actively to organize events such as this seminar, which are an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the true benefits of CDMA2000 and share experiences of other operators."

Presenters at the seminar included Dr. Rogelio Pardo, Costa Rican minister of science and technology; Soong-chull Shin, ambassador from the Republic of Korea; Margaret Hanson-Muse, senior commercial officer for the United States, and executives from the CDG, Lucent Technologies, Movilnet, QUALCOMM and SK Telecom. They spoke on a variety of topics, including key aspects of the CDMA interface, CDMA2000 evolution and migration paths and shared operator experiences and provided statistical figures, business models and data advancements for the technology.

The CDG also participated in a two-day event hosted by the Costa Rica Institute of Electricity (ICE), the sole telecommunications provider in Costa Rica, which took place in San Jose during the same week. The CDG encouraged ICE to deploy CDMA2000, a market-proven 3G solution.

"Costa Rica has the opportunity to migrate directly to 3G with CDMA2000," said Celedonio von Wuthenau, CDG's director of Latin American programs. "Operators and consumers alike will be far better served now and in the future with CDMA2000, which offers 3G today with better voice quality, higher data speeds, enhanced network capacity and requires only minimum investment for TDMA carriers such as ICE."

Fourteen operators in the Caribbean and Latin America have already launched CDMA2000 1X or 1xEV-DO and 10 more are planning to deploy networks this year. As of January 2003, there were more than 35 million CDMA2000 subscribers worldwide.
