Palm OS Handheld and PCS Voice Clarity into Compact Wireless Device with Color Display
13th August 2002

Sprint, the first U.S. carrier to introduce next generation services known as PCS Vision to customers nationwide, and Handspring announced commercial availability of the new PCS Phone by Handspring Treo 300. Designed exclusively for the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network, the first fully integrated device in its class combines a Palm OS® organizer -- featuring a PCS Full-Color screen and QWERTY keyboard -- and PCS Phone into one compact device. The Treo 300 by Handspring is now available nationwide at Sprint Stores, third party retail outlets, Sprint business channels including its direct sales force and PCS Business Solutions Program members, online at www.sprintpcs.com , and from Handspring's web site at www.handspring.com at a suggested retail price of $499.00.

"Following on the heels of last week's nationwide introduction of PCS Vision, we are thrilled to launch the highly anticipated Treo 300 to our customers. We've worked closely with Handspring to take the integration of wireless voice and data one step further by incorporating PCS Business Connection(SM), enabling one touch access to corporate email anywhere on the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network," said Phil Bowman, vice president, business marketing, PCS division, Sprint. "For customers who want a compact device that offers clear calls, access to the Internet, personal and corporate email, and PIM information in full color, the Treo 300 is a powerful productivity tool and stylish handheld providing users with the best in both form and function. As part of a PCS Clear Wireless Workplace solution, this smart device will help increase productivity, reduce costs, enhance customer satisfaction and create a competitive advantage."

Operating on the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network, the first CDMA version of the Treo family of handhelds offers crystal clear calls, high-speed wireless data access and the always-available capabilities of PCS Vision. With PCS Free & Clear with Vision plans, the Treo 300 by Handspring allows users to send and receive personal and corporate e-mail, search and browse information on the Internet at speeds averaging 50 to 70 Kbps, and do text messaging all at the touch of a button. Complete with a Palm OS organizer, the Vision enabled device provides a powerful and versatile productivity tool for people who need to stay connected, organized and in touch for both their personal and professional lives.

"Handspring believes the combination of our Treo and PCS Vision services provides busy professionals with the mobile communications experience they've been asking for. It's no longer necessary to carry multiple devices to send and receive email, access the Internet, make voice calls and stay organized," said Ed Colligan, chief operating officer, Handspring. "It is a testament to our strong relationship with Sprint that we were able to design the Treo 300 to take full advantage of their enhanced CDMA network and launch it simultaneously. We look forward to reaching a new group of customers."

Customers will enjoy better clarity and readability of text on a

160 x 160 mm screen with a full-color display, making the Treo 300 ideal for Web browsing and email, viewing photos, as well as playing games. It offers both a traditional dial pad and virtual on-screen keyboard. In addition to the large color display and a 33 MHz processor, the built-in backlit QWERTY keyboard allows for convenient data input and navigation, even in low lighting conditions, providing faster, more familiar data entry and navigation, and ease in locating business and personal contacts. The full featured device is designed for one-handed operation with 50 easily programmable speed dials, an intuitive keyboard that requires less than four keystrokes to look up any name in the PhoneBook, and a rocker switch on the left side of the device. Other features include a mute function, call log, three-way calling and speakerphone.

Designed with the mobile business professional in mind, the installation CD for the Treo 300 includes a direct link for customers to download PCS Business Connection(SM) Personal Edition. The software-based solution gives Treo users one-touch access to their corporate email, calendar and personal and corporate contacts while mobile. PCS Business Connection Personal Edition is included with PCS Free & Clear with Vision plans $84.99 and above and can be added to all other plans for $5.00 per month. Customers will be charged according to the number of megabytes sent and received. The service is designed to allow individuals to quickly and easily register for real-time mobile access to their corporate applications from a PCS Phone or other wirelessly enabled device connected to the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network. For Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes users, customers can also access calendar, personal contacts, and their corporate directory.

Powered by the Blazer 2.1 Web Browser, the Treo 300 displays text and graphics in vivid color, providing a rich viewing experience for users. Another feature for the mobile business professional is the Infrared Port that lets users "beam" electronic business cards, contacts, datebook events and applications to other Palm Powered handheld users. The product supports thousands of Palm OS applications for business and entertainment.

The Treo 300 comes packaged with a USB cable, travel charger, stylus, hands-free headset, CD-ROM including software, links and user's guide. For a limited time, it will also include a vehicle power adapter, enabling users to charge their device conveniently when on the go.

PCS Vision offers advanced wireless services that keep customers connected to the online world wherever they work, learn, play and communicate. The next generation services provide enhanced data speeds and improved applications, thanks to the strength of the enhanced Sprint Nationwide PCS Network, built from the ground up with next-generation technology in mind.
