Oracle and Ericsson Open Up 3G Market To Java Developers

Oracle Corp. announced plans to make it possible for Java developers to write intelligent network applications without needing deep knowledge of signal and telecom technology. Oracle9i JDeveloper and Ericsson Jumbala Service Capability Server (SCS) Simulator, will allow Java programmers to develop, test, and debug 3G applications that can be deployed on Oracle9i Application Server and accessed via Ericsson's Jumbala Parlay Gateway.

Until now, few developers have had the required knowledge to write applications such as mobile messaging systems, voice control applications or provide flexible service charging for the telecom market. Using Oracle9i JDeveloper and Ericsson's SCS Simulator, third party developers and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) can extend applications to leverage the existing telecom network or develop new applications for next generation networks.

These applications can be deployed on Oracle9i Application Server, which supports the open Parlay Application Program Interfaces (APIs) defined by the Parlay Group -- a multi-vendor, non-profit organization working to standardize APIs so applications can access core telecom network capabilities such as call control, for example, initiating calls between multiple parties, redirecting calls to voicemail, call-blocking, or making outbound calls from an address book. "With the industry standard Parlay as a base, Ericsson and Oracle are delivering a solution that makes it possible for Java developers to write applications for telecom in a familiar development environment," said Ingvar Larsson, vice president and general manager, at Ericsson. "We expect our efforts to greatly simplify telecom application development and accelerate innovation of next generation applications and services."

"The combination of Oracle9i Application Server and Ericsson's Jumbala Parlay Gateway lets developers deploy intelligent network applications in a scalable fashion."
