50 companies using or evaluating GSM, GPRS, CDMA and 3G Interface Chip
27th August 2002

Socket Communications announced that its proprietary CompactFlash and PC Card interface chips are being evaluated or used by more than fifty companies and have been designed into more than twenty-five electronic products. These products include PC cards allowing access to high-speed GPRS and CDMA2000 1X mobile phone networks, and plug-in Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers that provide location information to a handheld or notebook computer. Socket's interface chips are designed for high-speed data transfer in a mobile environment. The Company's newest chip supports combination input/output and memory functions for which Socket was recently awarded a U.S. Patent. Approximately ten percent of the Company's revenue in the quarter ended June 30, 2002 was from sale of interface chips, and these numbers are expected to grow as customers bring new products into the market.

Socket's hardware and software design experience with chips used for handheld computers and notebooks helped accelerate the development of our newest CDMA2000 1X PC card modem, the Merlin C201," said Peter Leparulo, senior vice president of CDMA operations for Novatel Wireless, a leading provider of wireless data modems and software for use with handheld computing devices and portable personal computers. "Our products are designed to keep up with today's emerging high speed 2.5G and 3G data networks, and Socket's interface chips are equal to that task."

Moses Asom, senior vice president & co-founder of SyChip, said, "SyChip's reference designs for GPS applications incorporate Socket's interface chips because these low-power components work well in handling large quantities of data, perfect for a mobile device environment." SyChip Inc. is a leading designer and developer of Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits and Chip Scale Modules for the wireless Internet appliance market.
"Socket is in the business of connecting mobile electronic devices, and our proprietary interface chips and associated driver software reflect more than ten years of experience in developing these components designed for high-speed mobile products," said Mike Gifford, executive vice president and general manager of Socket's Embedded Systems Division. "We use these chips in our own products, and our customers are assured of state-of-the-art technology as we develop new and improved chips for this emerging market."
