Validated GSM and 3G WCDMA Test Cases

24th August ,2004

Europe : Rohde & Schwarz has completed its R&S TS895x test system family to offer RF systems for mobile user equipment at all development stages. The systems support the specified test cases for second- and third-generation mobile radio. This means that, in terms of numbers, Rohde & Schwarz now holds a top position as a provider of verified and validated test cases. All systems of the R&S TS895x family are based on a common hardware and software platform, allowing even the compact and favourably priced Prequalification Tester R&S TS8955 to be expanded into a complete certification RF Test System R&S TS8950.

The two standardization bodies, GCF (Global Certification Forum) and PTCRB (Personal Communication System Type Certification Review Board), specify the required test cases for GSM and WCDMA. Their regional focus is on Europe and North America. Mobile user equipment is not admitted to the market until it has passed the specified tests. Rohde & Schwarz now has attained, in terms of the number of validated test cases offered, a leading position for GSM and its follow-on developments GPRS and EGPRS, including AMR (Adaptive Multi Rate), as well as for WCDMA. Rohde & Schwarz is the only company worldwide that offers validated RF test cases for EGPRS, for example, and covers all GPRS RF test cases in the four frequency bands.

Moreover, by completing its R&S TS895x family of test systems, Rohde & Schwarz now offers the appropriate equipment on which these test cases can be run. The R&S TS895x family includes RF test systems covering all development stages of mobile user equipment. The frequency range extends from 400 MHz to 2.7 GHz. The compact and favourably priced Prequalification Tester R&S TS8955 was devised especially for applications in development and quality management. The tester simulates a base station, which is today required of a test environment for second- and third-generation mobile radio. Based on this concept, the R&S TS8955 simulates all relevant transmitter and receiver test scenarios and performs the associated tests including, for example, the simulation of fading profiles and bit and block error ratio analysis.

Depending on the manufacturer's requirements, the R&S TS8955 can be expanded step by step into a full-fledged certification RF Test System R&S TS8950. The 3GPP standard defines the certification tests to be performed for GSM and WCDMA. The tests are classified according to transmitter, receiver, performance and RRM (Radio Resource Management) tests. The R&S TS8950 with RRM expansion fully supports these tests; the RRM test solution is also available as a separate system.

The tests systems of the R&S TS895x family are the only products on the market to cover test cases from the second to the third generation of mobile radio. The test cases can be called on a graphical user interface simply by clicking the mouse. Moreover, the user can modify all parameters as required via a straightforward input mask. The test cases, software and each individual unit were developed by Rohde & Schwarz, which means that the customer can choose from an optimally matched range of components. Another major advantage for the customer is in terms of support.

The R&S TS895x test family is now available from Rohde & Schwarz.
