Smartphone Sales Increase 34 Percent 2009

US : The worldwide growth of smartphones is being fueled by the addition of much wanted applications such as GPS navigation and mapping. It is predicted by Strategy Analytics that this will increase snartphone sales from fifty seven million units in 2008 to over seventy seven million units in 2009. This represents a thirty four percentage increase. Currently, the key benefactors are Nokia, Apple and Blackberry.

In particular, the trailblazers associated with this predicted growth are smartphones such as the Apple iPhone, Nokia N97 and the Blackberry Bold. The predicted growth is seen as a major success for smartphone manufacturers as the global recession has dampened sales in many other areas of telecoms.

From a technical point of view, on-board mobile device navigation capabilities are improving with the key smartphone manufactures setting the pace. These are seen as Nokia, Apple and Blackberry who are all pushing their map applications to the forefront.
