Vodafone Portugal with 330,000 3G Customers

Europe Portugal : Vodafone Portugal recently exceeded the figure of 4 million customers registered with its mobile network, an increase of around 12% over the last 12 months. The number of customers in the Portuguese mobile market grew by around 8% in the same period.

As the result of its innovation-led, competitive positioning, Vodafone’s market share in terms of numbers of customers grew by 2.7 percentage points during the last eighteen months and now stands at 34.3%, corresponding to a market share in terms of revenue from services in excess of 37%.

Vodafone Portugal was the only company whose market share increased during the period.

This gain in market share resulted from the attraction of around 430,000 customers over the last twelve months, an increase of 75% compared with the previous year. This made Vodafone the company that gained most customers during the period, attaining a market share of new customers of around 50%.

The growth in Third Generation Mobile (3G), introduced in Portugal by Vodafone in February 2004, contributed significantly to the good performance of these indicators. Vodafone Portugal currently has over 330,000 3G customers, corresponding to around 8% of its customer base.

Vodafone’s market share in 3G is estimated at 50% of the Portuguese market, testimony to the company’s marked leadership of the 3G revolution in Portugal. The success of mobile broadband services, in particular the Vodafone Mobile Connect Card 3G, made an important contribution to this positioning.

The take-up of 3G by Vodafone customers reflects the company’s strong focus on the introduction of this technology in Portugal in terms of investment in network coverage and quality, the range of services and content and the variety of handsets on the market.
