CDMA2000
Delivers 3G Services to the Americas |
5th December 2002 |
Inset is CDG EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: Perry LaForge who is quoted below. CDMA2000 is rapidly expanding throughout the Americas. In the past year, 18 operators in North, Central and Latin America have deployed CDMA2000 and are now delivering 3G services to millions of subscribers. Although the key strategic drivers behind the migration differ for each operator depending on their market and competitive situations, they all selected CDMA2000 to increase network capacity to support future subscriber growth, and/or to differentiate through high-speed data services. Other benefits of CDMA2000 to operators include ease of migration, relatively low capital investment requirements and widespread product availability. "The commercial success of CDMA2000 in the Americas and worldwide has demonstrated the tremendous market potential for 3G," said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. "CDMA2000 will continue to lead 3G because it delivers services and applications that the market demands and it offers a flexible and economical migration path, as well as a wide range of affordable products." With a large base of cdmaOne(TM) and TDMA operators, CDMA2000 is expected to dominate 3G in the Americas in the coming years. Seventeen cdmaOne and TDMA service providers in the Americas migrated to CDMA2000: Aliant Telecom Mobility, Bell Mobility, Cellular South, Centennial de Puerto Rico, ComScape, EPM-Bogota, Leap, MetroPCS, Monet Mobile Networks, Movilnet, SmartCom PCS, Sprint, Telefonica Celular, Telesp Celular, Telus Mobility, Verizon Wireless and Western Wireless. Thirteen more operators are scheduled to launch within the next year.
