3G Edge Seamlessly

6th December 2002

Alcatel confirms its successful volume deliveries and installation of EDGE-equipped mobile infrastructure solutions worldwide.

Inset is the standard Evolium Base Station Controller.

All Evolium? base stations shipped by Alcatel in 1999 and 2000 can seamlessly host plug-and-play EDGE transceivers as an option. Moreover,
since early 2001, EDGE is an integral part of Alcatel's standard product offering and all Evolium? base stations delivered to customers are fully
EDGE-equipped at no extra cost. Alcatel has already shipped Standard Edge equipment to over 100 networks worldwide making EDGE a tangible reality.

As a result, all Alcatel GSM/GPRS mobile infrastructure customers may
easily boost their existing network capabilities with EDGE while taking
maximum benefit from their past investments. Alcatel's approach has been to
anticipate EDGE by shipping up-front cost-effective, multi-standard network
equipment to allow smooth commercial opening of new end-user services as
soon as the appropriate handsets become available in volume.

In this respect, a number of leading chipset manufacturers, such as
Philips, have already announced their plans to provide EDGE devices.
Recognising the importance of end-to-end interoperable solutions, and based
on its wide GPRS and UMTS expertise in this field, Alcatel is firmly
committed to run thorough Inter-Operability Testing (IOT) campaigns with
these suppliers.

Marc Rouanne, President of Alcatel's Mobile Networks activities, said:
"Since the very launch of our Evolium program, we have clearly positioned
ourselves as a multi-standard infrastructure player. EDGE is a standard
capability of our mobile radio products, and we believe there is room for
this technology in the mobile data space. Especially in emerging markets,
EDGE will allow mobile operators to leverage their installed base by
introducing higher-speed and innovative mobile data services in a
cost-effective manner. As concrete examples, we have already supplied 27
EDGE-ready networks in Africa/Middle-East, 18 in Eastern Europe and 10 in
Southeast Asia. We have also supplied 3 EDGE-ready networks in the emerging
Latin American GSM market. Like for GPRS and UMTS, Alcatel will actively
push for open, interoperable and time-to-market end-to-end solutions."

"Capitalising on the broad experience of our two companies in GPRS, we know
that end-to-end interoperability testing is of the utmost importance to
ensure the successful commercial launch of new mobile data applications and
services," said Peter Baumgartner, Senior Vice President and General
Manager Global Market Segment Communications at Philips Semiconductors. "We
are happy to co-operate with Alcatel, and we believe their EDGE-ready
network solutions will be of high value to test our new EDGE chipset
generation in a live and comprehensive end-to-end network environment".
