Siemens Lands 3G UMTS Network Order

11th December 2002

The position of the Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (Siemens mobile) as the leading UMTS supplier has yet again been confirmed: P&T Luxembourg, the operator of the leading Luxembourg mobile network LUXGSM, has placed an order with Siemens mobile for the delivery of UMTS technology.

Siemens mobile will be the sole provider for the 3rd generation (3G) mobile network in Luxembourg. A framework agreement running into 2007 has been signed to this effect.
Siemens mobile is to supply and install all the necessary components of a complete 3G mobile network for P&T Luxembourg. This includes switching equipment for circuit and packet-based voice and data networks as well as the necessary transmitting and receiving units for UMTS - the Node Bs. 3G mobile technology allows mobile operators to provide their customers with broadband data services, such as fast mobile internet access and moving image transfers.

Siemens mobile has been the sole provider of GSM and GPRS mobile technology and intelligent network services to P&T Luxembourg since 1992. With more than 280,000 customers and a market share of more than 60 percent, P&T Luxembourg is the leading mobile supplier in Luxembourg.

"The agreement with Siemens mobile as a reliable partner is an important step, allowing us to supply our customers with innovative 3G multimedia services in Luxembourg in the near future," commented Marcel Gross, director general of P&T Luxembourg.

"We are pleased that we are now able to continue our many years of successful partnership with P&T Luxembourg by providing them with UMTS technology," added Lothar Pauly, Board Member of the Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group.

Siemens mobile and its partner NEC have now concluded agreements with almost all the major mobile operators for the provision of UMTS technology. Siemens mobile and NEC have already successfully demonstrated the functionality and reliability of their UMTS technology in tests with 21 mobile operators in Europe and Asia. These tests involved voice and data transfers both in UMTS test networks and with existing GSM and fixed networks across national boundaries. In one UMTS test network set up in France by Siemens mobile, voice and data transfers up to six times faster than ISDN were achieved in UMTS tests at speeds of 120 kilometers per hour.

At the end of last year, Siemens IC Mobile/NEC commissioned complete UMTS networks on the Isle of Man and in Monaco. These are used to transfer both voice and live images between terminals and to provide mobile intranet and internet access using UMTS. UMTS applications so far include mobile sending and receiving of e-mails, mobile video streaming and location-based information services.
