Latest European i-mode Mobile phone

16th December, 2004

Europe : NEC is further extending its portfolio of i-mode handsets in Europe, with the launch of the N401i. Following the success of NEC’s large portfolio of i-mode handsets within Europe, the N401i handset incorporates video and camera features and an MP3 player. The N401i will initially be supplied to KPN in the Netherlands.

The N401i’s sleek clamshell design is filled with innovative features and all the latest must-have functions. Users are not only able to shoot and send video, but can also take consecutive shots of people or views on the move using the cameras new 9 x Burst mode. The 4 x MPEG4 video camera incorporates a nightlight, ensuring that night time memories can also be captured.

Those interested in still photography can use the 300K pixels integrated camera to capture unforgettable experiences. There are seven picture formats designed to maximise creativity and picture quality: standard, sepia, monochrome, negative, darkness, person and room and users also have the option of a 10 second self-timer with a countdown LED and sound.

Clips can be sent to fellow i-mode users via i-mode mail, to other mobile users via MMS, or e-mailed to a PC anywhere in the world. Alternatively, users may simply wish to browse the photographs taken on the N401i’s 65,536 colour QVGA screen. Those wanting to personalise their handset can add images to display on the external LCD colour screen, as well as ringtones based on incoming caller ID.

The N401i ensures that users have always-on access to email and the internet anytime, anywhere, all from their mobile phone. The handset is also JAVATM enabled so consumers have all of the latest applications and games available at their fingertips. Alongside this, the inbuilt MP3 player means that no user will ever be without a source of entertainment whilst on the move.

The N401i also boasts tri-band functionality allowing the user to stay connected in five continents - ideal for the regular traveller.

NEC is at the forefront of i-mode innovation and development and is the largest i-mode handset manufacturer in Japan, supplying NTT DoCoMo. In March 2002, NEC launched the first ever i-mode handset in Europe, the n21i, which was supplied for the launch of KPN Mobile’s i-mode service. NEC also provides i-mode devices to BASE in Belgium, Bouygues Telecom in France, COSMOTE in Greece, E-Plus in Germany, FarEast Tone in Taiwan, Telefonica in Spain and WIND in Italy.

“The launch of the N401i demonstrates NEC’s continued commitment to i-mode in Europe” said Tony Hutson, Director, NEC UK. “The N401i offers users high-end, easy to use functionality, making it a must-have for anyone looking to combine style with optimum functionality.”

The N401i will go on sale in The Netherlands this Christmas.
