Novatel Wireless, Lucent Technologies and Singapore Telecommunications
Limited (SingTel) announce the availability of the Merlin U530(tm)
Wireless PC Card Modem for high-speed wireless data access on SingTel's
3G Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) network in Singapore.
Together with its regional partners, SingTel is Asia's largest multi-market
mobile operator, serving more than 56 million customers in six markets
- Australia, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
By installing
the intuitive MobiLink(tm) software from Novatel Wireless and inserting
the Merlin U530 into a laptop, users can access data at speeds of
up to 384 kilobits per second. Jointly developed by Lucent and Novatel
Wireless, the Merlin U530 provides high-speed access to streaming
video and audio, secure wireless access to emails with large attachments
and other corporate information stored behind firewalls. The Merlin
U530 is backward compatible to GPRS and GSM so users can stay connected
to SingTel's GSM/GPRS networks when 3G service is not available.
"We are pleased that our customers are the first in Singapore
to be able to enjoy a good choice of 3G devices that deliver broadband
access and the freedom of mobility," said Paul Kitchin, vice
president of consumer marketing for SingTel. "The Merlin U530
brings high-speed data services to corporate workers' fingertips -
making access to email and the Internet easier than ever before. We
look forward to a long-term partnership with Lucent and Novatel Wireless,
as we jointly deliver mobile access from virtually any location at
any time, meeting the demand for 'always on' connectivity."
"The
Merlin U530 will deliver fast and affordable wireless broadband access
to all SingTel customers within its 3G network," said Roger Derrien,
vice president for UMTS product management with Lucent Technologies
Mobility Solutions Group. "Having access to corporate networks
while out of the office provides the convenience that Wi-Fi doesn't
offer, offering true portability to remote workers. We are pleased
to work closely with SingTel to help roll out 3G services across Singapore."
"Novatel
Wireless is committed to meeting the demand for broadband wireless
data access worldwide," said Rob Hadley, senior vice president
of worldwide sales and marketing at Novatel Wireless. "By collaborating
with SingTel and Lucent, we are helping meet the demand for high-speed
data in Asia by extending 3G connectivity to mobile workers in Singapore."
Lucent
and Novatel Wireless are the global leaders in UMTS PC Card sales
with Merlin UMTS PC Cards available from 13 operators in 17 countries
throughout Asia, Europe, Middle East and North America.
