New NEC Movie Sha-mail Wireless Handset

J-PHONE Co., Ltd. announced it will offer a new Movie Sha-mail (video messaging) handset, the J-N51 by NEC, for sale after late April 2003. Movie Sha-mail is a service that enables users to send video clips of up to five seconds in length with audio as e-mail attachments.

Featuring a sleek and stylish design, the J-N51 is only 21mm thick, making it J-PHONE's thinnest clamshell model so far. It also boasts twin lenses that can take VGA resolution pictures using an embedded CCD camera with 310,000 effective pixels. The J-N51 also features large, vivid and high-luminance TFT LCDs for the 2.2-inch main display and 1.2-inch sub-display.

The J-N51 is capable of infrared communications, which allows users to exchange pictures and contact information, a first for J-PHONE. Additionally, the handset includes a new high-speed web browser and T9® text input and word prediction for easy text entry.

With the addition of the J-N51 to the J-PHONE lineup, there are now a total of seven Movie Sha-mail handsets, thereby bringing the pleasures of video messaging to an even greater number of people.

Sleek and stylish design, J-PHONE's thinnest clamshell model only 21mm thick
The J-N51 is J-PHONE's thinnest clamshell model yet at 21mm thick, which is made possible by NEC's high-density packaging technology. The J-N51's body uses a magnesium alloy that gives it a highly durable feel. The back of the phone also has a high-grade metallic finish surrounding the sub-display.

Twin lenses, VGA resolution photography with 310,000 effective pixel CCD camera
The J-N51 features twin lenses that use a CCD camera with 310,000 effective pixels. A total of six photography modes are available including "normal mode" for sending e-mail attachments, "movie mode" for video and "digital camera mode" for taking VGA (640 x 480) resolution pictures. Moreover, close-ups and bar code reading are made possible by equipping the included "sessha de lens" (closeup lens) accessory. The J-N51 also comes with a built-in mini light, which is effective for taking pictures in dark environments.

Large, vivid, high-luminance TFT LCDs for 2.2-inch main display and 1.2-inch sub-display
The J-N51 boasts a high resolution (160 x 216 pixel), large-size 2.2-inch TFT LCD. Compared to the previous J-N05 model, brightness has been increased by 15% and color reproduction and contrast performance have been roughly doubled. In addition, the J-N51 features the industry's largest-class 1.2-inch (120 x 80 pixel) TFT sub-display. Of course, the sub-display can also be used as a viewfinder when taking pictures.

J-PHONE first: infrared communications for image and contact info exchange
The J-N51 includes a range of infrared communication options, including picture stills, videos and address book exchange between J-N51 users. With the infrared remote control function, users can also operate televisions, VCRs, DVD players and karaoke machines.

T9® text input and prediction for easy text entry and new high-speed web browser
T9® text input software makes for a greatly reduced number of keystrokes to input text and its word prediction function displays highly used words makes for fast and easy text entry. Furthermore, the J-N51's new high-speed web browser has greatly improved processing times so users can access J-PHONE's mobile internet service J-SKY with even greater convenience.
