NEC to Develop the Mobile Multimedia i-mode Wireless in Spain

Telefonica Moviles Espana and NEC Corporation have entered into an agreement for the supply of a mobile multimedia platform system with a view to developing i-mode services. Telefonica Moviles Espana is the Spanish leading mobile telephony company, with more than 18,5 million subscribers in Spain. Telefonica Moviles Espana provides mobile services with GSM/GPRS systems, which is European 2.5G system, and plans to provide i-mode service from the first half of 2003.

The platform was developed by NEC, and is supplied off-the-shelf to Telefonica Moviles Espana. It is composed of a set of gateway systems which enable Telefonica Moviles' customers to gain access to the i-mode services on the GPRS, and mail-servers which enables the customer to enjoy multimedia messaging service.

NEC was awarded to provide the mobile multimedia platform system and handsets from Taiwan based mobile operator, KG Telecom, and service was started in June, 2002. It was Asia's first i-mode service launch besides Japan. NEC also provided mobile contents in order to make i-mode service more attractive when KG Telecom started the service. Moreover, NEC has won a contract to supply the mobile multimedia platform system from French mobile operator, Bouygues Telecom, too, which has started i-mode service since November 15, 2002. KG Telecom and Bouygues Telecom systems have been successfully operated. NEC is to provide attractive mobile internet services for both 2.5G and 3G mobile internet services and to expand mobile multimedia platform business, targeting European and the other areas of mobile operators in the world who wish to gain stronger customers' satisfaction and to increase revenue.

NEC plans to add mobile applications lineup and to construct more appropriate business formation considering working with leading System Integrators on the platform business along with server and total solution business of mobile application, and then, NEC believes to acquire the leading position in the mobile internet market.
