Symbian Goes Open Source

Symbian software powers over 330 million phones and has been developing software for over 10 years. Up until now manufactuers who wanted to use the Symbian operating software had to buy it or licence it. This was fine 10 years ago but with competitors like Apple ( iPhone ) and Google ( Android ) offering their software for free it had to change.

Symbian Foundation, who were bought by Nokia in 2008, has now made the Symbian software Open Source ie its free. The aim is to make it more popular with other mobile phone manufacturers. Symbian recently announced that a new version of Symbian 4 is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2011 which would feature a new user interface.

Meanwhile, Symbian are trying to get as many mobile phone manufactuers and OEMs ( Original Equipment Manufactuers ) to use Symbian 3 which also supersedes versions Series 40 and Series 60 in rediness for when Symbian 4 becomes available.
