New Leisure Phone Launched

18th January, 2005

ASIA : 3D-movement recognizing technology has lately been in uproar in Korea. Korea’s top 3 handset producers claim that their own rights to use the term ‘who’s the first.’ In fact, each producer has his own patents pending for the technology. Truth is yet to be known.

Heart of the matter, however, appears to be a question of how the technology has been utilized, rather than who has come first. Pantech stands as the official winner when it comes to who brought first to the public. Date goes back to October, 2004 of PT Expocomm China, where Pantech displayed CF400 (also called ‘Leisure Phone’), as the world’s first with 3D-motion recognizing technology phone. Unlike competitors who adopt the technology as a replacement for keypads, Pantech addresses another key trend in handset applications – leisure and fun.

Pantech’s PH-S6500 (nick named ‘leisure phone’) has two sets of 3-axis sensors each for terrestrial magnetism and acceleration (Sometimes called as ‘ 6-axis sensor’ since there are two 3-axis sensors). The former sensor is to recognize spatial movements, whereas the latter sensor is to sense directions. With these sensors combined with your physical information like height, weight and stride, the running mate gives the speed and the distance and the calories you burned. Meanwhile, the compass senses the direction you are heading, and the altimeter & barometer become valuable aid for mountain climbers.

Another crucial application of 3D movement recognition technology is found in the two embedded 3D games – fishing and car racing. Without having to push any buttons you can use the handset like a joystick. In fishing game, you steer the handset like a fishing pole by holding and tilting it to catch a fish. By the same manner, you control the handset like a steering wheel in racing game. Players will enjoy verisimilitude as in Playstation.

PH-S6500 has a sports-car look with semi-auto sliding. Its 1Mpix CCD camera rotates 270°, and mechanical shutter can control the light with internal flash. Video recording can run up to 100 minutes.

MP3P is provided with 3D dual stereo speakers and you can listen to maximum 18 songs. Without opening the slide you can enjoy the music and you can do other work like sending messages while you’re listening to music. Multitasking lets you play music while sending messages to your friends. Mobile banking and GPS functions are provided on demand.
