Wave Telecom Mobile Launch in Guernsey

Europe : As from today, Islanders have real choice in the mobile phone market for the first time. Wave Telecom has launched its mobile network providing direct competition to the services provided by Cable & Wireless (C&W) Guernsey, as well as new innovative mobile technology.

The Managing Director of Wave Telecom, Tim Ringsdore said, ‘We are delighted to launch our mobile network and offer the people of Guernsey some excellent tariffs, great value and real choice. We’ve listened very carefully to what Islanders want and have come up with an excellent product. We look forward to many people joining Wave in the coming days.’

Wave Telecom Pay monthly and Pay-as-you-go customers will be able to make and receive calls from across the world. Unfortunately, for the first week of operation, Wave Telecom customers will not be able to receive calls from C&W Guernsey customers. This is a matter that has been held up while C&W meet the OUR's licence requirements and this matter will be completed by 7th July 2004.

‘We have fully complied with the OUR’s directive to launch our service on the 1st July. Following the final signing of all relevant documents this morning, our network is ready to provide new services and true competition to the Island’ said Mr Ringsdore.

Wave Telecom is today signing up customers to its network, which will offer a variety of services with different tariffs to suit the specific needs of business and residential users. There are a range of packages offering bundles of free talk minutes and text messages, all at competitive rates. For those who want to take advantage of the latest new technology, Wave has services which bring the world of WAP, the Internet, email and pictures to your mobile.

Wave Telecom is the only communications company in the Channel Islands to have been awarded a 3G licence which will bring the benefits of video telephony to Islanders. Its 3G network is being optimised today and once fully operational, Wave will begin to roll out services associated with this innovative technology.

Major global communications supplier Alcatel provided the infrastructure for Wave’s new networks. The CEO of Alcatel UK Luc Defieuw said, ‘As a result of our close relationship with Wave Telecom, Guernsey mobile users can look forward to a whole host of exciting new mobile services including multimedia messaging, high speed data, web access and mobile video calls.’

Wave’s mobile networks will soon be extended into Alderney and Sark, with services due for launch by the end of the year.
