Production and Systems Integration of CDMA450 Base Stations in Europe |
21st July,2004 |
By sourcing production of the CDMA450 base station within Europe, Lucent will improve cycle and delivery times to its customers in the region as well as in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) by up to six days. Introducing CDMA450 base station production at the Bydgoszcz site supports Lucent's regional sourcing concept of having systems integration centres close to the customer, while maintaining local CDMA450 production in China for the Asian market. Lucent's Systems Integration Centre (SIC) in Bydgoszcz was established in 1993 and is currently the main regional source of 5ESS® switches and AnyMedia® broadband access solutions for the European market. In the last year, the Bydgoszcz SIC also has been selected to produce the 5ESS® Mobility Switch. By adding systems integration and production for CDMA450, Lucent can provide a cost-effective local supply chain for its customers in the region across a wide selection of its portfolio. It also enables Lucent to leverage its established supply chain in Poland and the region and provide faster response times by being in the same time zone. In May, Lucent expanded its Repair Center in Saint Petersburg, Russia to better serve its customers in Russia and the CIS, as well as in Central and Eastern Europe, with new equipment support services capabilities. Lucent added new capabilities such as repair, maintenance and support for CDMA450 base stations, in addition to the 5ESS®-2000 switching systems which are also manufactured at this facility. As part of this upgrade, Lucent installed new equipment, established a spare parts warehouse and provided additional training for the Center's personnel "CDMA450 addresses the unique needs of two important markets that have been largely underserved up to this point - a large base of analogue Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT)-450 operators and populations living in remote areas," said Rene van der Hulst, vice president of Lucent Technologies' Supply Chain Networks in Europe. Lucent provides a range of CDMA450 voice and data devices via its alliances with many of the world's leading device vendors and has deployed commercial CDMA450 networks for Vietnam Power Telecom, Delta Telecom and Moscow Cellular Communications - both part of the SkyLink initiative in Russia - and Zapp Mobile in Romania. In addition, Lucent is conducting numerous CDMA450 trials with other customers around the world. "CDMA450 is a compelling offer for operators with 450 spectrum - it enables them to dramatically improve the quality of voice calls via the introduction of 3G digital technology, while also enabling them to deliver mobile high-speed data services to many consumers who lack basic Internet access," said Stan Szuder, customer group leader Central and Eastern Europe for Lucent Technologies. "Lucent's CDMA450 solutions also provide superior coverage and capacity when compared with older analog mobile telephony systems currently deployed in 450 spectrum in many markets, which means mobile operators can cover large geographic areas with fewer base stations." Lucent's CDMA450 solutions support third-generation (3G) mobile technologies such as CDMA2000 1X, which provides voice and data capabilities, and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, which provides high-speed data capabilities at speeds of up to 2.4 Megabits per second. A global leader in the development of commercial 3G spread-spectrum solutions, Lucent's Mobility Solutions Group has deployed CDMA2000, CDMA450, and W-CDMA/UMTS networks with more than 30 customers on the continents of North and South America, Asia, Europe and in the Australia/New Zealand region. Lucent has deployed more than 90,000 spread-spectrum base stations for mobile operators worldwide, of which 50,000 are already supporting 3G services.
