Huawei Deploys 3G HSDPA Network

Europe : Huawei Technologies announced that it recently deployed a High Speed Download Packet Access (HSDPA) network in the state of Kedah to support the 11th Sukan Malaysia National Sports Event (SUKMA). The HSDPA network enabled Celcom Malaysia’s 100,000 UMTS subscribers to watch a ‘live’ broadcast of the many sporting events that took place across 13 sport stadiums via their 3G mobile phones.

Huawei implemented and deployed the HSPDA network within a short duration of 7 days, one of the fastest turnaround times for a project of this nature, to meet the launch of the SUKMA event. The network covered 13 stadiums in the major cities of Kedah State, including Langkawi Island, one of Malaysia’s major tourist resort islands. Despite the project’s significant challenges, Huawei worked closely with Celcom to ensure the successful deployment and implementation of the HSDPA network during the entirety of the SUKMA event.

Commented Mr.Hj Suidn Che Man, Project Director of Celcom Berhad, “We were deeply impressed with Huawei’s efficient response to our requirements and even more so with its fast turnaround time in delivering the equipment ahead of schedule. As a result of Huawei’s significant efforts in this undertaking, we were able to provide 3G services for our subscribers to enhance their enjoyment of the SUKMA event within a short time.”

Mr. Liu Jiangfeng, vice president, Huawei Technologies Asia Pacific, said, “Huawei has always been committed to meeting the needs of our customers by consistently creating maximum value for them. This successful project is a demonstration of Huawei’s customer-focused strategy and our ability to deliver world-class products, solutions and services for our customers. We are glad to be able to support Celcom, one of our key customers, in building a 3G network with larger capacity and higher efficiency to bring advanced HSDPA services to 3G subscribers in Malaysia.”

This project is an extension of Huawei’s ongoing cooperation with Celcom and its parent company, TM. Huawei won TM’s 3G network expansion contract in the fourth quarter of 2004 and is the major vendor in the deployment of TM’s 3G network. Huawei’s well-proven network deployment capabilities, professional services and fast equipment delivery were the key reasons why it was awarded the contract, where Huawei will provide WCDMA New Generation Node Bs and HSDPA services to Celcom. At present, Huawei’s base stations system (UTRAN) covers major cities in Malaysia including Johor, Melaka, Penang and Kedah.

Huawei has more than 80 local service organizations with mobile engineering teams in and more than 5,000 engineering staff globally, with more than 10 years of construction and service experience in mobile networks. Huawei has successfully delivered 5,000 projects in the areas of mobile network planning and optimization.
