US : Semtech Corp. announced the EClamp238xP, a family of resistor-capacitor (R-C) protection devices with the low capacitance, high attenuation and low clamping voltage needed for high-frequency color LCD interfaces in GSM and CDMA-based 3G handsets. The products are the newest addition to Semtechs EMIClampTM protection portfolio.

The EClamp238xP series includes the four-line EClamp2384P, the six-line EClamp2386P and the eight-line EClamp2388P. The EClamp238xPs two-pole R-C filter network has a 200 Ohm resistor and two 12pF capacitors, enabling the devices to offer minimal attenuation in the passband and 30 dB minimum attenuation from 800 MHz to 2.7 GHz, ideal for GSM, CDMA or 3G-based mobile phones.

Each device in the family includes TVS diodes for electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection and an R-C network for electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) filtering. The devices complement Semtechs EClamp237xP series of resistor-capacitor (R-C) devices, giving designers more flexibility for protecting color LCD displays.

The EClamp238xP devices are available in the RoHS/WEEE-compliant Semtech Leadless Package (SLP), which offers the same small, low-profile design as flip chip alternatives, but with increased manufacturing durability. The high integration of the EClamp238xP devices replaces 32 discrete passive devices in a typical handset design, thus saving board space.

The EClamp238xP packages are narrow (1.6 mm) and low profile (0.58mm) with a variable length depending on the number of lines supported. The flow-through design of the devices alleviates the need for signal routing for a faster and more convenient layout.

Electrical transients that can distort a signal are more common on handsets due to the added functionality of cameras, video and Internet access requires more lines making proper protection a critical feature, said Tom Dugan, Semtech Marketing Manager for Protection Products. With the EClamp238xP family, we have given designers R-C devices that offer the same 30dB of attenuation, low clamping voltage and low capacitance as our L-C products.

Key Features of the EClamp238xP

  • Protection and filtering for 4,6,8 lines
  • Two-pole R-C filters for high level of feature integration
  • SLP package offers flow-through design with manufacturing durability
  • Filter performance: 30dB minimum attenuation 800 MHz to 2.7GHz
  • Resistor series: 200 Ohm; Capacitors: 12pF
  • ESD protection to IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 (±15kV air; ±8kV contact)
  • RoHS/WEEE compliant

Pricing and Availability

The EClamp2384P (order code: EClamp2384P.TCT), EClamp2386P (order code: EClamp2386P.TCT) and EClamp2388P (order code: EClamp2388P.TCT) are available immediately in production quantities. Each EClamp device is priced at $0.32 each in 1,000-piece lots. Semtech offers comprehensive design assistance, including field- and factory-based support.
