Vodafone K.K. Expands 3G Service Areas

Europe : Vodafone K.K. announced that it will expand service areas and upgrade the network quality*1 of existing service areas for its 3G network launched December 2002 to further increase customer convenience. In the month of June, Vodafone K.K. plans to expand 103 service areas, upgrade the network quality of 342 areas and add 122 indoor coverage spots for a total of 567 additions.

At the end of June, 3G network national population coverage is expected to be 99.6%*2. Furthermore, this month 3G coverage will be extended to an additional 89 subway stations in the metropolitan area (88 Tokyo Metro stations, 1 Toei Subway station), making it possible to access services at all Toei Subway stations. Full coverage at all Tokyo Metro stations is expected in early July.

A breakdown of service expansion areas and regions are as follows.

Hokkaido Region: Service area expansions: 5, network quality upgrade areas: 13
Tohoku-Niigata Region: Service area expansions: 8, network quality upgrade areas: 8
Kanto-Koshin Region: Service area expansions: 3, network quality upgrade areas: 139, indoor spots: 104
Tokai Region: Service area expansions: 7, network quality upgrade areas: 8
Kansai Region: Service area expansions: 75, network quality upgrade areas: 131, indoor spots: 12
Hokuriku Region: Network quality upgrade areas: 4, indoor spots: 1
Chugoku Region: Service area expansions: 4, network quality upgrade areas: 21, indoor spots: 3
Shikoku Region: Network quality upgrade areas: 1
Kyushu-Okinawa Region:Service area expansions: 1, network quality upgrade areas: 17, indoor spots: 2

Vodafone K.K. will actively expand service areas so more customers can use its 3G service.

*1: Vodafone K.K. will further arrange and increase wireless base stations to increase call quality and circuit numbers in the existing services areas of cities, towns and villages.
*2: Population coverage calculated on basis of whether communication is possible at municipal offices of cities, towns and villages.
