Spirent Supports W-CDMA Region 2 Testing

1st July , 2004

Europe : Spirent Communications announced a "first-to-market" automated RF test capability for W-CDMA terminals that are designed for use in the Region 2 band.

This Region 2 capability has been developed on the industry-leading Spirent U-ATS UMTS Automatic Test System platform, which also has 26 RF test cases from the 3GPP TS 34.121 specification approved by the GCF (Global Certification Forum).

ITU Region 2 covers the Americas and the Caribbean. The Region 2 band, also known as UMTS1900, will initially be used for deployment of 3G W-CDMA in the North American market. Tests for this band will undergo validation for approval by the PTCRB (PCS Type Certification Review Board). The 3GPP RF test cases supplied with the U-ATS system have been verified with several top-tier Region 2 W-CDMA terminals. This includes transmitter, receiver and performance test cases defined in TS 34.121.

"Our coverage of W-CDMA Region 2 shows Spirent's dedication to offering cutting edge solutions to our customers," states Rob Van Brunt, vice president of marketing for Spirent Communications' Wireless division. "We believe this is the first commercially-available system to automatically test a terminal's RF performance in the UMTS1900 band, offering a comprehensive platform to terminal manufacturers and carriers looking to successfully deploy W-CDMA in North America."

The U-ATS system with Region 2 capability is available in both the U-ATS Conformance System and the U-ATS FLEX Systems. The U-ATS Conformance System is a comprehensive, fully-automated test solution that runs industry-standard 3GPP test cases for formal RF conformance testing. It includes Spirent's market-leading physical layer performance analysis tools to ensure that terminals are tested under representative real-world conditions. The system is driven from Spirent's TestDrive UMTS test executive software for seamless test configuration and execution without any requirement for scripting or programming.

The U-ATS FLEX System configurations also support Region 2. These flexible, scalable system configurations address a wide range of applications and budgets. FLEX Systems enable customization of industry-standard test cases and the creation of user-defined tests for focused testing during development, integration and design verification of 3G W-CDMA terminals.

U-ATS forms a complete range of solutions suitable for all phases of W-CDMA terminal design, development and deployment. The addition of Region 2 support further demonstrates Spirent's commitment to sustain and enhance its leading role in accelerating the global rollout of next-generation wireless services.

Spirent's wireless test solutions aid in all phases of mobile device development and deployment for the world's leading chipset, mobile and infrastructure manufacturers and mobile network operators. Spirent's extensive CDMA experience has led to it being considered by the industry the "one-stop-shop" for CDMA handset performance and certification testing. Among its accomplishments, Spirent has introduced the first and only integrated solution available to test location-capable CDMA phones, a critical element of assisting manufacturers in meeting the U.S. FCC E911 requirements. Spirent has now leveraged its success in mobile performance and certification testing to bring comprehensive performance analysis to the W-CDMA market.
