3G W-CDMA Signaling Tester Supports HSDPA at 14Mbps

07 June, 2005

Europe : Anritsu has introduced its new W-CDMA Signaling Tester, the MD8480C, a Node B (base station) simulator which supports the evolution of 3G networks to 3.5G (HSDPA). Featuring a maximum data rate of 14 Mbps, The product sets the leadership position for high-speed mobile data communication testing. In addition to testing data and communications functions of W-CDMA, GSM and GPRS system equipment, the simulator can also be used to test wireless and protocol layers of mobile phone HSDPA channels based on the Release 5 of 3GPP Standards.

High-speed data communication services utilising the 3.5G HSDPA system are scheduled for commercial roll-out later in 2005, and wireless operators are preparing to launch services. As a result, chip set and mobile phone manufacturers are developing and verifying operations of HSDPA-compatible UMTS mobile phones. The HSDPA system features variable rate data communication at a maximum speed of 14 Mbps - faster than W-CDMA. HSDPA employs new Node B algorithms that control the user data rate, making a Node B simulator indispensable for developing and verifying operations of chip sets and mobile phones.

Anritsu's MD8480C Signaling Tester fully supports the functions and development capability of the current Anritsu range of Signaling Testers. This means that it can test functions of modulation/demodulation processing in mobile phones, protocol sequence (location registration, call/reception and handover), as well as application tests using HSDPA high-speed packets.

The HSDPA functionality supports all 12 UE categories defined by the 3GPP Standards. Employing a new hardware platform, realizing high-speed throughputs of 30 times higher than for conventional platforms, it sets a precedent for practical data communication tests at a maximum of 14 Mbps. This enables the MD8480C to fully test and verify the more complex performance of next-generation mobile phones.

In addition, used along with Anritsu's protocol test system (PTS), the new MD8480C will enable users to build a complete protocol test environment to latest 3GPP Standards. This allows testing from development through to conformance test and certification of HSDPA chip sets and mobile phones.
