ASIA : Motorola has been chosen by VIBO Telecom of Taiwan for the large-scale island-wide deployment of its new UMTS network, including an upgrade to High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) which will further increase download speeds of UMTS and improve the user experience of new, converged services enabled by 3G technology. VIBO plans to launch commercial UMTS service across Taiwan in Q4 2005. Under a contract signed earlier this year Motorola will provide the UMTS Radio Access Network (UTRAN), comprehensive support services and mobile devices for greenfield-operator VIBO's 3G network, intended initially to support three million subscribers. This network will enable VIBO to address new markets for 3G multi-media services, and will expand capacity and broadband capabilities to support more voice and data than what would be enabled by 2/2.5G solutions. "Motorola's UMTS solution lets us rapidly introduce a powerful service offering while giving us a cost effective way to upgrade to HSDPA for even faster mobile broadband services in the future," said David Wang, general manager of VIBO Telecom, Inc. "As consumers seek an increasingly more captivating blend of services beyond games and ringtones into video streaming and new location-based services, Motorola's exceptional UMTS and HSDPA solutions will help us provide outstanding quality to the wireless subscribers of Taiwan." "3G technologies are making a huge impact on how we live and communicate today," said Simon Leung, Regional President, Motorola Asia Pacific. "VIBO's drive to deliver the first commercially available HSDPA deployment in Taiwan over Motorola's network equipment will provide its subscribers innovative, in- demand services to help VIBO build its brand and drive new revenue opportunities by inspiring subscriber usage and loyalty." Motorola's network architecture is easily upgradeable from UMTS to HSDPA, requiring only a simple software download when VIBO is ready to enhance its 3G network. This cost-effective migration path enables VIBO to offer top-quality 3G services upon deployment and leverage its investments as it continues to expand its network capabilities. Motorola began shipment of its UMTS Node B Horizon 3G base stations to VIBO in April 2005. About HSDPA HSDPA is a key enabling technology for mobile broadband. As the next step in the evolution of UMTS, it provides significant performance benefits, as well as up to one-third reduction in the cost per bit of delivering data. HSDPA frees UMTS capacity to carry voice traffic. Its greater capacity also supports more users enjoying higher speed mobile broadband. For example, with peak download speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps, an entire novel can be downloaded in just about 10 seconds. About VIBO Telecom VIBO, a 3G service operator, plans to launch 3G network across Taiwan in Q4, 2005. VIBO's 3G network will provide advanced broadband capabilities and 3G multi-media services to the wireless subscribers of Taiwan. VIBO is part of the Kinpo Group. The group is currently comprised of various entities, including Kinpo Electronics, Compal Electronics, Compal Communications, Inc., Teleport Access Services, Inc., and PC Home Ventures Fund. With full resources of Taiwan's communication products, the Kimpo group is capable of providing comprehensive mobile services vertically. |
