3G UMTS Solution with HSDPA Upgrade for 3G Network in Taiwan

ASIA : Motorola has been chosen by VIBO Telecom of Taiwan for the large-scale island-wide deployment of its new UMTS network, including an upgrade to High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) which will further increase download speeds of UMTS and improve the user experience of new, converged services enabled by 3G technology. VIBO plans to launch commercial UMTS service across Taiwan in Q4 2005.

Under a contract signed earlier this year Motorola will provide the UMTS Radio Access Network (UTRAN), comprehensive support services and mobile devices for greenfield-operator VIBO's 3G network, intended initially to support three million subscribers. This network will enable VIBO to address new markets for 3G multi-media services, and will expand capacity and broadband capabilities to support more voice and data than what would be enabled by 2/2.5G solutions.

Motorola's network architecture is easily upgradeable from UMTS to HSDPA, requiring only a simple software download when VIBO is ready to enhance its 3G network. This cost-effective migration path enables VIBO to offer top-quality 3G services upon deployment and leverage its investments as it continues to expand its network capabilities.

Motorola began shipment of its UMTS Node B Horizon 3G base stations to VIBO in April 2005.

HSDPA is a key enabling technology for mobile broadband. As the next step in the evolution of UMTS, it provides significant performance benefits, as well as up to one-third reduction in the cost per bit of delivering data.
