IP Wireless Deploy 3G UMTS Mobile Broadband Technology in New York

9th June , 2009

US : IPWireless announced that its UMTS mobile broadband technology has achieved full system acceptance by the city of New York for its city-wide, multi-agency wireless network (NYCWiN).

NYCWiN, the most comprehensive wireless broadband network of its kind, was designed and engineered by IPWireless and its system integrator partner Northrop Grumman to deliver new levels of responsiveness, efficiency and cost-containment for both emergency and non-emergency municipal services. Initially designed and engineered to improve public safety mobile workforce communications, NYCWiN has evolved to support multiple city agencies and applications.

The multi-agency network supports more than 19 municipal departments and over 50 discrete applications including: * mobile fingerprinting, mobile field reporting and mobile access to photos and crime databases for police agencies * automated vehicle location and remote access to video feeds for first responders * remote traffic light management and wireless enabled traffic sensors for transportation departments * automated water meter reading for improved environmental protection * automated vehicle location for more than 400 vehicles across more than a dozen agencies, which can provide real-time management of the City's vehicle fleet Through a single, integrated network the city has realized performance benefits which have led to increased cost savings across multiple agencies, enhanced cross-departmental communications and improved the cost-efficiency of existing fixed line applications once migrated onto the wireless network.

"NYCWiN, powered by IPWireless' mobile broadband technology, will provide robust, reliable and resilient datacommunications, enhancing coordination and ensuring that critical information reaches our mobile workforce, to the benefit of all City agencies and the people they serve," said Paul Cosgrave, Commissioner NYC Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT). IPWireless' UMTS based V5(tm) mobile broadband platform was selected for NYCWiN based on its proven high-performance, predictable mobile broadband connectivity, its upgrade path to R7 and R8 3GPP standards and unique ability to take advantage of limited spectrum licensed allocations. In tests, the IPWireless platform also delivered the resilience and network stability required to withstand overloaded conditions better than alternative wireless broadband solutions.

The network, consisting of approximately 400 cell sites spanning all five of the New York City boroughs, utilizes licensed spectrum to provide city wide coverage across more than 300 square miles, and throughout 5,800 miles of roadway. The IPWireless solution offers unique low-latency Quality of Service and Tier of Service mechanisms to deliver prioritized and preemptive network access to specified users and groups, such as government officials or emergency response personnel. The solution also supports the highest data rates at the cell edge and delivers the greatest per-sector performance compared with alternative mobile broadband technologies.

"By delivering the uncompromising network performance and broad-based application support necessary to meet the stringent requirements of one of the world's largest and most preeminent cities, IPWireless has created a blueprint for deploying a multi-agency wireless network that enables cities of all sizes to realize greater cost savings, increased productivity and improved mobile communications for the greater safety of its citizens," said Dr. William Jones, Chief Executive officer of IPWireless.
