3G Not Even On Drawing Board

5th March 2003

The latest Strategy Analytics report, "Western European IT Decision-Maker Survey: Wireless Investment Climate First Sightings," finds that IT managers in the UK, Germany France and Italy are bullish on wireless deployment in 2003 and 2004. One-third of the IT managers surveyed cite speedy access to data for decision enhancement (particularly in customer-facing situations) as the top benefit sought from mobile solutions.

"WLANs are on the fast track, particularly in the Professional Services sector. Overall, 44 percent of respondents expect to have WLANs in place by 2004, with a subset of 15 percent anticipating a role for public WLAN hot spots," states Cliff Raskind, Director of the Strategy Analytics Wireless Enterprise Strategies Service.

David Kerr, Vice President of the Global Wireless Practice at Strategy Analytics adds, "IT managers have bought into the benefits of wireless solutions, but are anxious to avoid rogue applications. The good news is wireless solutions spend will ramp up in 2003 & 2004. The bad news (for operators) is that IT managers remain unconvinced of the merits of letting phone companies, whether wired or wireless, implement or manage their mobilized applications. IBM and HP are in strong positions among the majors while specialized wireless solutions vendors will continue to thrive in 2003."

Other key findings:

-- Wireless is only one solution among dozens competing for an IT manager's time and budget. GPRS access is still a distant dream for many even before they realize the less than satisfactory performance of sub-landline data speeds;

-- 3G is not even on the drawing board for most IT respondents;

-- Top Management, Sales and Marketing continue to drive wireless solutions deployment.

Published by the Strategy Analytics Wireless Enterprise Strategies (WES) service, the report provides a timely finger on the pulse of IT managers' perceptions on wireless solutions and wireless solution providers in Western Europe. The survey focused on determining planned wireless expenditures in 2003 and 2004 from the Finance, Insurance & Real Estate (F.I.R.E.), Healthcare/Pharmaceutical, Professional Services and Manufacturing sectors with emphasis on the priority applications, departments and targeted personnel for wireless solution investments.
