3G UMTS Wireless Expert Joins Bechtel |
27th March 2003 |
Payam Taaghol, a UMTS expert and commercialization consultant, has been named director of network planning and wireless technology for the European division of Bechtel Telecommunications. Taaghol will head up Bechtel Telecoms' technical services for wireless communications technologies that are currently standard for services in Europe, including GSM, GPRS, and UMTS. Bechtel Telecommunications, a leading network engineering and construction firm, is a unit of Bechtel Corporation, a privately held company with 47,000 employees and $13.4 billion in 2001 revenues. "Payam's knowledge of European wireless technology, and his experience in business planning, will enable us to provide a unique service," said Bechtel Telecoms President George Conniff. "Payam helps us combine construction and engineering with RF engineering and network optimization services that are specifically directed at meeting the needs of European carriers." "Conventional network planning is about to re-invent itself," Taaghol said. "A more business-driven process will demand cost-effective delivery of services through the most efficient radio access segment, be it 2G, 2.5G, 3G or WLAN. Service planning and segment dimensioning will therefore become an integral part of the network planning process." Taaghol submitted and obtained two patents for UMTS-related systems while a senior research fellow and lecturer in the Mobile Communications Research Group, Center for Communications Systems Research (CCSR), University of Surrey, UK. He was recently senior manager for network design and optimization of wireless systems for Europe, Middle East and Africa for a large international consulting firm, where he was responsible for business planning, business development, personnel management, and technical matters related to GSM, GPRS, and UMTS design and optimization. Taaghol obtained his Ph.D. in adaptive and predictive power control for CDMA based mobile communication systems from CCSR. Taaghol will be responsible for all technical matters related to the design, implementation, and optimization of wireless systems for Bechtel's clients in Europe, Africa, Middle East and Southwest Asia (EAMS). He will report directly to Paul Kecskemety, managing director for the Bechtel Telecoms EAMS business unit in Bechtel Limited in Hammersmith, London, UK. |
