SIMphonIC 3G MEGA Card

1st March , 2004

Europe : The technological evolution of new generation of Java™ handsets, the fantastic range of multimedia services and emerging standard such as the JSR 177 1 , stimulated the enhancement of memory capacity card which can take these advances to a new dimension and create a synergy between technology and
service offers.

TIM and Oberthur Card Systems are the most innovative players with their double package: the first 1Mega Byte USIM Card with multimedia applications. Oberthur Card Systems - one of the world’s leading providers of smart card based solutions - and TIM - the most innovative Mobile Operator on the market – have joined forces to revolutionize the telecommunication sector.

In line with its strategy to satisfy partners and to be the most advanced SIM Card supplier, Oberthur Card Systems has responded to this challenge developing the first 1 MB USIM card that answers this new market need.

TIM’s strategic requirements were to combine several issues such as security, interface speed, user profile portability and mobile independency, while proposing the most advanced services. Based on previous experience and services on the 128KB card and thanks to the JSR 177 API’s, TIM envisions a far richer environment on the 1MB USIM card.

In exclusivity for the 3 GSM World Congress in Cannes, TIM and Oberthur Card Systems are the only player to present applications and demonstrations with the SIMphonIC 3G MEGA based on ST22FJ1M chip from STMicroelectronics, one of the world’s leading suppliers of silicon chip technology.

• TIM’s operator menus enhanced with colour icons
• Photos associated to contacts in the phone book

• Multiple ring tones on the SIM
•Access to videos secured with proprietary DRM

This very impressive demonstration emphasizes the large memory capacity and the benefits for an operator which proposes the 1MB USIM card to its end-users. The USIM card usually stores critical subscriber authentication information and private data such as personal phone directories and messages. In the emerging 3G world, where multimedia content such as MMS, audio or video downloads are widely used, memory capability and interface speed are crucial issues.

Furthermore, because this personal private data is stored in the USIM card rather than the mobile phone memory, it roams with the subscriber from one handset to another. Large memory capacity USIM cards present an opportunity for mobile operators to improve
their current services taking advantage of emerging standard such as JSR 177 and the new generation of multimedia handsets.
