Rapid 3G WCDMA Conversion Planned

24th March , 2004

Europe : Rohde & Schwarz has started to develop test scenarios for global-roaming third-generation mobile radio with the Japanese telecommunications giant NTT DoCoMo, Inc. As a result of these development activities, different mobile radio phones whose function is defined by 3GPP will work smoothly under real network operation conditions, which have been specified by NTT DoCoMo.

Rohde & Schwarz is to convert the test specifications developed by NTT DoCoMo into 80 executable test scenarios by the end of July 2004. These scenarios will ensure smooth global-roaming on 3G networks. The official 3GPP test specifications require that each mobile radio phone be tested one protocol layer at a time. These tests are ideal in particular for certification purposes since they indicate which parts of the 3G standard have been correctly implemented in the user equipment. Interoperability between a mobile radio network and user equipment is ensured only if a parameter set is tested while all protocol layers are interacting. Such test scenarios largely reflect the real conditions of a telecommunications network that is ready for operation. Thus, they support the fast introduction of third-generation mobile radio.

The newly developed test scenarios comply with the protocol standard of the official 3GPP test specifications. They are therefore of enormous interest also to European and American companies. Rohde & Schwarz is the ideal partner for development because it is playing a leading role in the development of the official 3GPP test specifications.
