CDMA2000 Solutions Can Support 3G Mobile

14th May 2003

China : Lucent Technologies announced it has successfully completed a series of tests of its CDMA2000™ equipment at 2.1 GHz spectrum in China, including the successful completion of CDMA2000 voice and high-speed data calls. These test results demonstrate that Lucent's CDMA2000 solutions can support third-generation (3G) mobile services using 2.1 GHz spectrum. This spectrum band has been allocated for 3G services in China and other markets worldwide.

Inset above is Mary Chan VP R&D Lucent Mobility who is quoted below.

Lucent set up a CDMA2000 2.1 GHz interoperability test system at the Chinese Ministry of Information Industries' MTNet facility to conduct the tests, which build on earlier successes Lucent has achieved in the commercialization of CDMA2000 for 2.1 GHz. For example, in October 2002, Lucent completed voice and high-speed data calls on a trial system deployed at a Lucent U.S. facility in Whippany, New Jersey.

"As the world leader in spread-spectrum technologies, Lucent can provide mobile operators in China and other parts of the world with 3G CDMA2000 or W-CDMA 2.1 GHz solutions that enable them to deliver low-cost voice and high- speed data services to customers," said Mary Chan, vice president of research and development for Lucent's Mobility Solutions Group. "This particular series of tests in China further demonstrates Lucent's readiness to support 3G CDMA2000 services at 2.1 GHz spectrum."

The testing was conducted in adherence with the CDMA2000 system testing specifications of the China Wireless Telecommunication Standard group using Lucent's CDMA2000 2.1 GHz network equipment and CDMA2000 testing terminals from various device manufacturers. Lucent's CDMA2000 2.1 GHz base stations provide significant investment protection because they can support the advanced capabilities of CDMA2000 1X, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, and CDMA2000 1xEV-DV in the future.

In August 2002, the CDMA Development Group and eight wireless vendors including Lucent, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to deliver CDMA2000 infrastructure, terminal equipment and related technology to be deployed in 2.1 GHz spectrum. Equipment developed under this agreement is currently being used to support these testing efforts.

Lucent's Mobility Solutions Group is a leading global provider of mobile networking technologies, having deployed more than 80,000 spread-spectrum base stations for mobile operators worldwide, of which 40,000 are already supporting 3G services.
