3G Industry Concerns |
5th May , 2004 |
Left shows one of the services provided by 3G Operator 3 - this is the Movies channel. Currently, 3 does not allow open internet access via its 3G phones but only content supplied directly from 3. Therefore it is safe. 3G mobiles are currently available in the UK via 3, but the larger 3G operators will be launching 3G over the coming months. If these phones have internet access in 2004, it would allow open-door internet access for youngsters just as the internet does. NCH, the children's charity, is concerned that the phones do not have pre-installed software for filtering out content not suitable for children to view or be exposed to. Of concern to nearly 4 out of 5 parents was that their children could use the phones unsupervised and away from home. John Carr of the NCH said " For the mobile operators to suceed in the teen and youth market they will need to first convince the parents that these phones can used safely without supervision" |
