ROK to Market 2.5G Mobile TV in China
3rd May , 2006

Europe : UK-based mobile technology and entertainment developer, ROK, has announced it's Beijing subsidiary, ROK New Net, has signed a strategic licensing agreement with Shanghai Dragon Mobile Information Ltd, a subsidiary of Shanghai Media Group (SMG), to provide ROK's patent-pending mass-market 2.5G mobile TV technology in China.

Shanghai Dragon Mobile Information Ltd is the only approved content-supply company for the worlds larget mobile network operator, China Mobile and, as such, this agreement means ROK technologies will drive the roll-out of mass-market 2.5G mobile TV in China..

The agreement allows SMG to deploy multi-channel mobile TV services to 2.5G handsets via GPRS, powered by ROK technologies, across China and will include international and Chinese-language channels. The roll-out will be on a regional basis initially forecast to begin in Shanghai, Guangdong and Fujian later this year and is aimed at recruiting 'several million' subscribers in the first 12 months alone.

With mobile TV predicted to become a multi-billion pound industry worldwide over the next few years, the deployment of such services in China demonstrates the high expectations that TV-on-mobiles represent for networks and content-owners alike.

"To be at the forefront of the deployment of mass-market mobile TV in a country such as China is incredibly exciting" reports Jonathan Kendrick, Chairman and CEO of ROK. "The potential of mobile TV worldwide is staggering, so we are delighted to have been chosen as the technology provider for these services in China."

It is reported that there are now more than 2 .2 billion mobile phones in use worldwide with China Mobile alone adding an average of 4 million new customers to it's existing 350 million subscriber-base every month.

"The service we're putting together with SMG will deliver multi-channel mobile TV across GPRS to mass-market 2.5G mobile phone customers" added Kendrick "so you don't have to subscribe to 3G and nor do you need to wait for deployment of new broadcast technologies such as DVB-H to receive ROK-powered mobile TV."
