Europe : In 2011, 3G mobile broadband users in the UK will have overtaken fixed broadband users. This is the findings of a new Mobile Broadband report from research company mobileSQUARED. There will be over 36 million 3G mobile devices in the UK and around 6.5 million 3G mobile dongles / embedded modems producing a total of just under 43 million users. At this point fixed broadband users are overtaken by 3G mobile broadband users.
Currently, mobile internet traffic accounts for up to ten percent of a company’s total internet traffic. However, the research company predicts that internet usage will remain predominantly with fixed broadband for the period 2009-2014.
During this period 3G mobile services and content revenues ( plus apps ) in the UK will grow three fold from over 240 million pounds to 720 million.
Similarly, the analyst house forecasts that revenue from the core internet-based mobile advertising models of banners and links, search and tenancy, will be worth £83.7 million in 2014.
“Mobile will become the primary access point for brands and businesses communicating with its consumers within two years,” said Nick Lane, chief analyst at mobileSQUARED, and author of the report. “Mobile is always-on, and the average user carries their device for an average of 16 hours a day. So if a company or brand is not already considering how to use mobile, then they need to because their customers are.”
The full report ( Taking Internet Mobile: UK ) will be released at the Taking Internet Mobile Roadshow, being held at on Thursday 5 November at 76 Portland Place, London from 1.30pm.
