UK : The UK currently has five 3G Network operators but two of them fancy a rumble regarding the size of their 3G networks. We covered an article recently :
Orange Pushes Its 3G Network to the Tune of 4 Million Pounds
In this article Orange UK say “the Orange network covers over 93 percent of the UK population, which is greater than any other UK 3G network.” This would appear to be true yet 3G mobile operator 3 UK has questioned this and has reported Orange to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
It kicks off now because Orange has invested 4 million pounds to say that its 3G network is more extensive than anyone else’s. The advertising campaign began this month and is called ‘You’re Covered’
3G Operator 3 UK’s rumble :
"Right now, each operator chooses a population coverage measurement that suits it. We currently claim 92% coverage. We could use a measure used elsewhere in the industry that would boost our claimed population coverage to 95% in an instant, without reaching a single extra customer," said a 3 spokesperson
Orange UK’s rumble :
"We’re confident that we have the biggest 3G network in the UK, both in terms of geographic and population coverage, built on a 9,192 site network that grows by around 150-sites each week. We’re happy to open up our network to a third-party to judge."
