Vodafone Offers 3G Roaming

18th November 2002

HUNGARY’s third mobile operator Vodafone (under the name VRAM Rt) announced that Hungarians can now use the world’s first third generation (3G) mobile-phone roaming network.

Graeme Millar, marketing director of Vodafone, said that under VRAM’s agreement with J-Phone of Japan (also an affiliate of Vodafone), Hungarians visiting Japan will be able to use the Japanese network while maintaining their own Hungarian Vodafone SIM card and call number.

Third generation networks are capable of data transfer at a far greater speed than the current GPRS networks in Europe.

3G roaming is presently limited to the Japanese capital but intensive work has been going on to expand this.

The Vodafone group currently has 185 networks in 84 countries and from January next year will provide 200 3G networks in 100 countries.
