3G Mast Appication Refused - Midlands UK

28th November 2002 by Express and Star Dudley Paper

An "eyesore" telecommunications mast which was compared to Blackpool Tower will stay at its present size after councillors threw out plans to make it bigger.

The 70ft mast, in Jews Lane, Upper Gornal, could have been made 5ft higher and had three antennae and a dish added if councillors had gone along with the recommendation to approve it.

Inset is Blackpool Tower, UK. In reality, the tower is approx. 520 feet high.

Government policy states that masts already up and running should be shared between companies to keep them to certain areas rather than being dotted all over the place.

But Dudley Council development control committee unanimously voted against proposals, by Airwave MMO2 Ltd.

They heard that a petition was signed by 38 residents and four letters were also sent to Dudley Council objecting to the size increase.

Neighbouring resident John Jones said the tower was one of the largest in the West Midlands and householders did not want it to get any bigger.

He added: "It is the biggest one I have ever seen, which stands close to residential properties."

Councillor David Stanley said: "It is well known that this tower is an eyesore. We should get rid of it not increase it. This application should be refused because what is already there is enough."

Councillor Ken Finch added that although the tower had been there for many years, it did not mean that it was right.

"It looks like Blackpool Tower and I have doubts about the whole thing," he said.

The committee also refused plans for a mobile phone mast at UK Commercials, High Street, Pensnett, after residents said it would spoil the look of their homes.

The application by Hutchinson 3G UK Ltd was to install the mast within vehicle company UK Commercials, near Lenches Bridge.

And plans to install mobile phone aerials near a Halesowen primary school were rejected after protests from its board of governors and nearby residents.

A total of 187 residents signed a petition protesting against plans for the installation on the roof of the Halesowen telephone exchange in Whitehall Road.
