Nokia Fancies Wireless Power

Nokia Fancies Wireless Power

5th October , 2009

US : The chances of being able to charge your Nokia mobile phone wirelessly took a step forward today. The world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer took the plunge and joined the Wireless Power Consortium.

They are not the first mobile phone manufacturer to take the plunge. They join Sanyo and Samsung. There are currently 9 Regular Members and 5 Associate members so its quite early days for the Consortium.

Currently, the Consortium say that you could charge your mobile phone wirelessly but it can only be 7.5 centimeters away from the transmitter. This is a big limitation and is one of the key areas that the Wireless Power Consortium is working on.

Intel Labs ( a Consortium Regular ) in Seattle recently did a demo of wireless power transfer by means of Wireless Resonant Energy. See above photo - this shows the 2 coils used in the demo for wireless power transfer. This technique means that, in theory, the receiver ( e.g. mobile phone ) can be charged whilst you move around a room where the transmitter is located .

We will keep you up to date with how things develop further. It is predicted that wireless charging will become probable in the coming years.

Markku Verkama, Director, Devices R&D, Nokia  said “Wireless charging technology carries significant potential to enhance consumer experience of battery charging. Consumers expect ease of use and general compatibility of mobile devices.
