Europe : 3G operators are being offered an alternative to expensive GPS ( global positioning system ). The alternative is to have timing and synchronisation carried straight over 3G packet networks.
Zarlink Semiconductor has introduced ToP ( Timing over Packet ) technology which offers strict timing demands for 3G RAN ( Radio Access Network ) network equipment. This is a single chip solution ( see above ). The RAN equipment opportunity has been calculated at 11 billion US dollars by 2013 say say Infonetics Research.
The ToP technology allows 3G operators to remove costly leased lines used for backhaul voice with a less expensive 3G packet infrastructure and lets the timing and synchronization information to be transferred via 3G base stations and radio network controllers over a higher bandwidth packet network.
Zarlink's ToP products have been successfully demonstrated over a number of networks. Frequency accuracy of less than 30 parts per billion (ppb) and time alignment of less than +/-1 microseconds (usec) can be achieved over five nodes using a cost-effective temperature compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO). A detailed performance report is available to qualified customers.
"Our highly integrated ToP products simplify and speed the design of new network equipment to allow manufacturers to reach market quickly. The products meet all synchronization requirements, including time alignment, as wireless networks evolve from GSM through GPRS and EDGE to WiMax and LTE. By deploying Zarlink's ToP products, carriers can gradually evolve to a more cost-effective packet network that supports a wider range of services." Said Jeremy Lewis from Zarlink's Timing and Synchronization product group.
