3G Phone Commences Production
24th October 2002

Following Motorola's showcase of the first live 3G handset at 3GSM World
Congress in February 2002 and CeBIT in March 2002, the company commenced serial production of the world's first dual mode 3G (UMTS) handset on Friday 27 September in Flensburg, Germany.

The handset, the Motorola A830, is designed to deliver on the promise of 3G. The dual mode handset works on both new 3G networks and 2/2.5G networks - meaning the phone can still make/receive calls even if it is not in a 3G coverage area. With both technologies the phone can also be used in most major cities in 170 countries around the world.

Other functions of the A830 include; multi-media-messaging, which allows
audio and video clips to be sent and received, as well as a clip on camera
accessory. The multi-call function allows the phone to be used for more than one function at a time, for example it is possible to make a phone call whilst downloading a music clip from the net. Other added extras include an integrated MP3 Player, a GPS receiver, and the latest games. The A830 can also accommodate memory cards up to 256 MB to store media content.
