ROHC Over Wireless Links

2nd September 2003

Europe : Investigation of compression gain and QoS impacts of ROHC over wireless links. Using acticom's ROHC product leads to bandwidth savings and simultaneously to an improved quality of service.

In cooperation with the Arizona State University (ASU) the R&D group of acticom has investigated voice and video services over error-prone links. As an result they could show that compression ratios up to 50% of the original bandwidth for both video and voice can be achieved. This helps network operator to maximize their revenue.Furthermore for voice services the quality of service in terms of segmential SNR measurements improved by 3dB using acticom_ROHC.

Two technical reports are available now. Shorter versions are presented at the "International Conference on Internet and Multimedia Systems and Applications (IMSA 2003) " and "Fourth International Conference on Information, Communications & Signal Processing and Fourth Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia (ICICS-PCM 2003)".

about acticom_ROHC

Robust header compression (ROHC) supports efficient use of scarce wireless resources for multimedia data with real-time constraints. Reducing the overhead of IP-based headers in packet-oriented communication networks significantly improves performance especially for multimedia data services as for example audio or video transmissions. acticom investigates the performance of ROHC for a large variety of services such as voice, audio, and video. While for audio and voice services the potential of ROHC is obvious, there seems to be even a high potential for video services (our measurements were based on H.26L). We will report these measurements soon.
