US : Nokia Siemens Networks announced today it has been selected by TerreStar Networks to deploy its Internet-HSPA solution for the TerreStar all-IP integrated satellite and terrestrial wireless communications system. This will be Nokia Siemens Networks’ first commercial I-HSPA network deployment, a significant milestone for a standardized technology for which Nokia Siemens Networks has been a pioneer.

Nokia Siemens Networks will provide its Flexi WCDMA Base Station as an integrated part of an Internet- High Speed Packet Access (I-HSPA) flat architecture solution, as well as a full suite of engineering, design, and optimization services for the TerreStar North American network deployment.

“Nokia Siemens Networks’ Flexi platform and I-HSPA architecture deliver the network performance and economics that are essential to supporting next-generation mobile communications services over our integrated satellite-terrestrial system,“ said Robert Brumley, President and Chief Executive Officer, TerreStar. “Nokia Siemens Networks’ ability to deliver world-class solutions on an aggressive deployment schedule was a critical factor in our selection process as we build out North America’s first 4G integrated mobile satellite and terrestrial communications network.“

Nokia Siemens Networks is a pioneer in I-HSPA. I-HSPA flattens the network architecture, eliminating legacy circuit-switched technology, creating an advanced wireless service architecture optimized for native IP applications, such as voice, data, and mission critical information applications. I-HSPA is the only commercially available all-IP solution, and is optimum for edge deployment within TerreStar’s MSS service. TerreStar will leverage Nokia Siemens Networks’ I-HSPA technology as the foundation for development of LTE services.

“Today’s announcement marks a series of firsts for Nokia Siemens Networks: we’re deploying the first I-HSPA network, we’re delivering the first satellite band Flexi, and we’re deploying the first direct tunnel packet core,“ said Sue Spradley, Head of North America, Nokia Siemens Networks. “We’re truly excited that TerreStar has chosen the advantages of Nokia Siemens Networks’ state-of-the-art solutions to be incorporated into their architecture enabling the first ever all IP-based 4th Generation Network Application environment. Additionally, we look forward to introducing the capabilities of TerreStar to our industry clients and prospects through a joint marketing plan with TerreStar that will be implemented beginning this quarter.”

When TerreStar’s network is deployed in 2008, the company will provide universal access and tailored applications to millions of users throughout North America via mass market commercial wireless devices. TerreStar will serve a range of customers including homeland security agencies, public safety agencies, rural communities, and wireless carriers.
