3G / LTE Smartphones with Mobile Processors To Soar
2nd September , 2009
US : The semiconductor industry has recognized that the 3G, LTE and 4G mobile industry is likely to be its highest growth market as the mobile industry takes a much greater interest in “merchant market processors” which will become much more prominent in mini 3G enabled notebooks, MIDs and smartphones.
The demand for merchant market processors is forecast to reach 775 million units by 2013 per annum. The majority of this growth will result from sales for smartphones.
A merchant market processor provides much better high end performance and integration levels than the current MCUs and ASICs which will reduce the smartphone manufacturing costs.
The key points from the research by In-Stat revealed :
The report "Mobile Processor Review" from In-Stat covers the worldwide market for mobile merchant market processors, including CPUs, applications processors, and baseband processors.
“Integration will be a key trend for future devices with multiple cores, graphics/multimedia acceleration, and I/O all continuing to be integrated into the processor,” says Jim McGregor, In-Stat analyst. “Likewise, baseband functionality will also be integrated into mobile processors for all applications except PCs, which are less reliant on the connectivity and smaller device footprint.”
