The Nokia 1.3 is one of the very cheapest smartphones you can buy, and while you might not expect much for the money it’s actually very usable.

That’s helped no end by the fact that it runs Android Go – a stripped-back version of Android that’s designed for low-end phones. But it’s running the Android 10 version of Android Go, which means its operating system is also up to date, which is something many cheap phones don’t manage.

Plus, it’s running more or less stock Android, which means it’s ready for Android 11 when that launches. So it’s remarkably future-proofed.

And much of the hardware of the Nokia 1.3 is surprisingly good too. It has a 5.71-inch 720 x 1520 screen, which means there are 295 pixels per inch, making it respectably sharp for such a low-end phone. The display can get quite bright too, so it looks good even outside.

You also get a modern design with this phone, complete with just a tiny notch and a 3D nano-textured back that looks and feels good.

Other highlights of the Nokia 1.3 include a dedicated Google Assistant button, so AI help is never far away, the promise of all-day life from its 3,000mAh battery, and an 8MP camera that’s designed to take good photos even in low light. So as a first phone, a secondary phone, or just a super cheap main handset, the Nokia 1.3 is a strong choice.
