Overview

Galaxy A8

The Samsung Galaxy A8 is a mid-range alternative to the Samsung Galaxy S8 or Samsung Galaxy S9, but it’s more than just a chopped down flagship as it has a dual-lens front-facing camera, which is something neither of those and few other phones offer.

Specifically, it has a 16MP lens and an 8MP one, both of which have an f/1.9 aperture. Combined, they let you blur the background of your selfies for a bokeh effect, similar to Portrait Mode on the iPhone X. This allows for striking shots, and you can adjust the focus after taking the photo to get it just right.

The Samsung Galaxy A8’s rear camera is worth talking about too though, as this 16MP snapper is designed to work well even in low light.

Your photos should look great on the Galaxy A8’s screen too, as it has a 5.8-inch 1080 x 2220 one with a crisp pixel density of 441 pixels per inch.

It’s an extra-wide 18.5:9 display, just like the Samsung Galaxy S9, and like that phone it uses Super AMOLED for great contrast and vibrant colours. It’s also an edge-to-edge display with slim bezels, so the Galaxy A8 has a premium look.

It’s built to last as well, thanks to IP68 certification – meaning it can be submerged up to 1.5 metres deep in water for up to 30 minutes.

And it’s got smart security as well, with both a fingerprint scanner and facial recognition on offer.

Of course, the Samsung Galaxy A8 is also quite powerful, with both 4GB of RAM and an octa-core Exynos 7885 chipset clocked at up to 2.2GHz. That’s not Samsung’s most powerful, but it’s competitive with other phones of this price.

With 32GB of storage and a microSD card slot too there’s really nothing missing from this phone for the money, making the Samsung Galaxy A8 a strong choice if you want a flagship-like experience for less money.
