After an Android flagship? You’ll struggle to do better than the Samsung Galaxy S8, a phone that combines stunning style with cutting edge power and future-proofed features for all round almost perfection.
Let’s start with that screen, since it’s the first thing your eyes will probably be drawn to. The Samsung Galaxy S8 has a 5.8-inch 1440 x 2960 QHD+ display. That’s a higher resolution than almost any other phone and it’s bigger than most too, yet it’s been squeezed into an impressively compact 148.9 x 68.1 x 8mm body, which means it won’t feel too much like a phablet in the hand.
Samsung’s done that by almost eliminating the bezels and delivering a front that’s all screen. Well, almost all screen. There’s still room here for a high-spec 8MP front-facing camera and even an iris scanner, for high-tech security.
The screen is curved too, which further helps it fit into the small frame and gives it a real edge-to-edge look, and it uses Super AMOLED for bright and vivid images across all 570 pixels per inch.
You also might have noticed that it’s long. That’s because it uses a new 18.5:9 aspect ratio, where most phones are 16:9. That extra length means you can comfortably run two apps side by side. And it supports mobile HDR, so you can view content on your phone like never before.
The design is one of the best around too, with a metal frame and a gently curved glass back. It’s similar to the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, but with no home button, for a more striking front, and with the fingerprint scanner moved to the back.
Like the S7 Edge, the Samsung Galaxy S8 is also IP68 certified dust and water resistant, which means you can submerge it up to 1.5 metres deep for up to 30 minutes.
Samsung’s also launched its own AI assistant with the Samsung Galaxy S8. Called Bixby, this can make calls, analyse images and more. It’s a bit like Google Assistant (which you also get) and has a dedicated button to launch it.
Of course, we can’t talk about a flagship phone without talking about the raw power and specs, and the Samsung Galaxy S8 is every bit as impressive here, with 4GB of RAM and an octa-core Exynos 8895 chipset, with four cores clocked at 2.3GHz and four running at 1.7GHz. That’s Samsung latest and greatest mobile processor and it delivers formidable performance.
The Samsung Galaxy S8 also has a great 12MP camera on the back, which you can point, shoot, and get high quality photos from. You’ll have plenty of space to store your snaps too, with 64GB of storage built in and a microSD card slot for up to 256GB more.
A 3,000mAh battery keeps the S8 running and supports fast and wireless charging, and the Galaxy S8 is the first phone with Bluetooth 5.0, which is faster and longer range than the previous generation of Bluetooth.
Taken as a whole then the Samsung Galaxy S8 is a big, beautiful, masterpiece of a phone and one that’s likely to still be among the best by the end of 2017.
