BlackBerry’s BBM service is doing pretty well, with a solid base of users on Android, iOS and of course BlackBerry devices, but until now Windows Phone had been left out.
That’s changing though as BBM for Windows Phone has now entered beta. Currently the beta is full, so you won’t be able to download it immediately, but BlackBerry promises that the final version will be ‘available shortly’.
In the meantime information from the beta can give you a good idea of what to expect when it does arrive. Fundamentally it looks much the same as the app on other formats, with the ability to talk to one or more contacts in a single conversation, share pictures, voice notes, calendars and your location and use BBM groups to share things with up to 50 contacts at once.
However what has changed is the overall look of the app, which has been redesigned to fit in more with the Windows Phone UI. That means a clean, modern design, with three core sections to the app which can be switched between with a swipe.
There’s ‘Contacts’ where you’ll find all of your BBM contacts, both individuals and groups, along with the ability to search for contacts, create new groups and start new conversations. You can also pin contacts to the Windows Phone start screen for easy access.
Then there’s ‘Chats’, which is a list of all your conversations, whether with an individual, multiple people or a group. You can access existing conversations or start new ones and you’re not limited to just typing replies, you can also attach pictures, voice notes and more.
Finally there’s ‘Feeds’, which shows you the latest status updates and photos from your contacts, as well as allowing you to change your own status and if you tap anyone’s name from here you’ll be taken to a chat screen with them.
All in all it sounds like another solid BBM release and one that’s been long overdue for Windows Phone users.
