There is yet another affordable Android tablet available in the UK thanks to Kobo who have released the Kobo Arc. The tablet is available to buy from WH Smith in the UK with prices starting at £160.
Kobo have their work cut-out because their tablet will have to compete with the Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the Google Nexus 7, which are both similarly priced and have 7 inch displays. So how does the Kobo Arc compare to its rivals ?
Well. the Kobo Arc has a 7 inch IPS display running at a resolution of 1280*720 pixels which stands up just fine against Amazon and Google's tablets. Furthermore, it's powered by a dual-core 1.5 Ghz processor and has 1GB of RAM , which makes it faster than the Kindle Fire HD and slightly slower than the Nexus 7.
Three models are available with the choice of between 16, 32 and 64GB of on-board memory , which gives it a larger maximum capacity than its rivals. The tablet only supports WiFi and runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich, which puts it at a slight disadvantage against the Nexus 7 which comes in a 3G version and runs on Jelly Bean.
The Kobo Arc comes with a 1.3 mega-pixel front-facing camera for video calling and a number of accessories are available at launch including interchangeable back covers a book-style leather case. As we mentioned previously the tablet is priced at £160 for the 16GB version, while the 32GB version comes in at £190.
Overall, we think the Nexus 7 still has the edge on the Kobo Arc due to it's faster processor and newer version of Android. However, the Kobo Arc seems to pitched as alternative to an e-book reader , so it's more natural competitor is the Kindle Fire HD and it stands up very well against Amazon's device !
