The Windows RT version of the Microsoft Surface has been on the market for some time already and we've been waiting patiently for the Windows 8 version to launch. Well, now we know it'll launch in January and we've also learnt how it'll be priced.
The Microsoft Surface Pro will be available in a choice of either 64 or 128GB models which will be priced at $899 or $999 respectively. That equates to around £560 for the 64GB model and £620 for the 128GB model, although the prices might differ slightly in the UK.
So how does the Windows 8 version of the Surface differ from the Windows RT one ? Well, aside from running the fully-fledged version of Windows 8 the Surface Pro also has a much higher specification than the RT version.
The touch-screen display on the Surface Pro is the same size as the Surface RT(10.6 inches), but runs at a much higher resolution (1920*1080 v 1366x768 pixels). That gives it a higher PPI and makes it perfect for watching HD movies.
Furthermore, the Surface Pro runs on an Intel i5 processor which you'd normally find in laptops, whereas the Surface runs on an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor commonly found in smartphones and tablets. Consequently, the Surface Pro is a much more powerful device than the RT version of the Surface.
The Surface Pro also comes with more on-board memory , supports USB 3.0 and has a mini/display port which the Surface lacks. However, the cameras on the tablets are identical and they both support WiFi.
Aside from the increased price the major disadvantages of the Surface Pro are that it's much heavier than the Windows RT (908g v 676g). This makes it a slighly less portable device, while the battery life is also half of that of the Surface.
The price might put of a lot of general users off, but for business users the Microsoft Surface Pro offers a good alternative to a laptop. Running the full version of Windows 8 brings with it many features that will be greatly appreciated by business professionals and 3G can see it proving popular in that market.
